Centreville, Nova Scotia
Originally from Scotland, I emigrated to Nova Scotia with my husband in 2013, looking to escape city life and make a home in rural Nova Scotia. I have always been an artist, but never considered it a career option until 2018. With my mother a dressmaker and artist, and my father a mathematician, I excelled in both art and science and struggled to find a career path; first studying film, then forensic science and embarking on a career as a fingerprint expert. Throughout I kept painting, and a well-received first solo show in Halifax in 2019 gave me the boost to make art my focus. I am self-taught and focus on timeless subject matter, and capturing light in a photorealistic style.
Q+A
Only thing you need when you leave the house
My phone. I listen to podcasts a lot, and find things I want to take a quick photograph of often.
Favourite movie
Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Avengers
Coffees per day and from where
I don't drink coffee, but I do drink a lot of tea! Orange pekoe :-)
What do you listen to when you work?
Podcasts. I like true crime, history and paranormal podcasts, they help me focus.
What artists do you admire right now?
Natalie Featherston, Mark Boedges, Renato Mucillo
Favourite medium
I go back and forth between acrylic and oil. I love acrylic because it dries fast, and I can be very detailed with it. But I love the blending ability of oils. So I struggle to choose; it depends on my mood (and what I've been painting with at the time).
